2012 and All That: The End of the World, from 500 to Now

"2012's Doomsday Predecessors: An Apocalyptic Primer"
Underwire, Wired Magazine (November 11, 2009)

"The sky is falling, again, as three upcoming movies explore the end of days, the apocalypse or whatever you want to call the dead-end ash heap that strikes fear in the hearts of true believers — and conjures visions of box office gold in the minds of Hollywood executives...."

Aside from a quick look at what Hollywood is cooking up, this article takes a look at end-of-the-world predictions, from "500 A.D.: Hippolytus' false alarm" to "1988: Rocket scientist gets Rapturous" - the latter involving a book that sold about 4,000,000 copies.

Sooner or later, the 'and we're all gonna die' bunch could get lucky: but I'm not holding my breath.

Me? I've seen quite a few predictions for the coming end of the world:

I'm still tweaking my apocalyptic scenario, but that's for a story. Very little relation to reality.

Brigid,

Yeah: Quite a few doomsday scenarios start falling apart when a person starts getting facts and crunching the numbers.

Still, if something stopped the moon dead in its tracks, and it dropped on Earth: that would be bad. Somehow, though, I don't see that happening.
