Christmas at the Lemming's

Meet Norbert Nerdly

It's been one of those weeks. With nothing but a message reading "taking a vacation, told Norbert to get something ready," the Lemming disappeared. Norbert Nerdly, the inside — person — at A Small World of Websites, dutifully produced content for today's post. But he's no Lemming.

Thank you, Norbert. We all appreciate the effort, and hope the Lemming will at least send a postcard before next Friday.

Holiday Viewing Marathon

The Lemming has no idea what's going on here; or why "Chumley, the Elf Who Slept Through Christmas," "Twinkles and Popbubble: Secret Elves," "Desperately Seeking Dunder and Blixem," "Star Boars Holiday Special: The Pigs Who Saved Christmas," "Flurry the Snowman," "Seymour Osborn's Christmas in Altoona," were in the viewing queue.

The Uncle Crunchy Ploy

"Over the River and Through the Wood" recalls pleasant memories of Thanksgiving, snow, pumpkin pie, and pudding. Maybe it's Jowler the dog that bothers the other turkey.

The feathered duo is apparently promoting "Uncle Crunchy's Thanksgiving Treat: Tofu Turkey!" again. They tried that back in 2011.

The Lemming may or may not be back tomorrow morning, with a "Friday morning" post. That depends in part on how heartily the Lemming indulges in holiday festivities, the nature of reality, and the Lemming's notoriously scatty imagination.

Remembering

One week ago today, an evening in Paris did not end well. More than a hundred people were killed, most of them at a rock concert.

After that, the Lemming thought posting another 'Galaxy Cadet' image might seem a bit insensitive. Besides, the Lemming wasn't feeling particularly upbeat. Not to worry, though: the Lemming should have something ungloomy ready for next Friday.

This week, however, the Lemming will be less apathetic than usual. About the 'remembering' picture: the Lemming intention was to express sympathy for folks affected by last Friday's attacks in Paris — and everyone else whose life has been disrupted by similar events.

Galaxy Cadet: What's Different?

(Galaxy Cadet, 2015)

(Galaxy Cadet, 2009)

From the archives of Baum Media Productions, the Lemming presents something that's apparently not from any of the Galaxy Cadet movies.

The top picture is pretty much the same as the bottom one, but the perceptive reader will notice several obvious differences — and, if the perceptive reader has nothing better to do than keep looking, a few not-so-obvious differences.

There is no prize, no contest, winners will not be announced at the annual Baum Media company picnic; and it is the Lemming's opinion that perceptive readers have better things to do with their time.

But, although there is positively no 'spot the differences' contest — maybe perceptive readers will actually think looking for differences is worth their time. Lemming has been wrong before. Fairly often.

Take "Gormful," for example: who would have guessed that dictionary compilers don't think it's a word? "Gormless," yes; "gloomful," "roomful," and "doomful," Yes. "Gormful," no.

The Lemming Regrets ...

Apparently the circumstances are of a technical nature: something to do with a computer and preventive maintenance. Also mentioned by the Lemming: contemplation; a Nero Wolfe novel; and an easy chair.

Meanwhile, the Lemming suggests that readers look on the bright side: the Lemming could have asked Narcissus-X back as a guest blogger.

The Lemming Will Be Back

First, the good news. The Lemming will be back.

Maybe that's not good news. It depends on your viewpoint, but the Lemming thing's it's a 'plus.'

Now, not-so-good news. The Lemming needs a vacation. More accurately, the Lemming is taking a vacation. It started several hours ago.

The Lemming shall return. There might even be something ready by Friday. Then again, maybe there won't. That depends on what the Lemming runs into during the next few days.

That didn't come out right. The Lemming doesn't run into things. Not that way. It depends on what the Lemming finds that might conceivably be of some interest.

No, that's too wordy.

The Lemming definitely needs a vacation, and will be back — as soon as the Lemming gets back, and not a minute sooner.

Narcissus-X Proffers Plenteous Provisos

(Narcissus-X, proffering plenteous provisos.)

Periphrastic pleonasms, ostentatious expositors, banished vulgarians! Narcissus-X willingly assists the Lemming, proffering plenteous precepts, purling pearls or pairing purlins by the penguin portal.

Narcissus-X further declares that the Lemming's retreat continues. But fear not for the Lemming! For Narcissus-X is at hand, elevating this banausic blog through profound vaults of obsidian splendor.

Not for naught has Narcissus-X ascended the nadir of nattering Nibelungian nabobs. Had the Lemming sought Narcissus-X, sought artist, sought art, spotted snakes with double tongue, weaving circles round him thrice; then might the Lemming have leaped large lengths of miles.

But time twists and moments pass as pigeons on the grass, alas! Narcissus-X is here and the Lemming's path is knotted through haunts where slithy toves gyre and gimble in the wabe. Mimsy are the borogoves, when the mome raths outgrabe: and many hunt the snark in vain.

Time, tide, and Plato's fifth solid, surely shall return the Lemming to this blog. But not today.

This isn't Shakespeare, but neither is Narcissus-X.

Ashikaga Yoshiakira's Birthday, Independence Day, and All That

Turns out that 1005 Boxelder Drive is a pretty good place to set up chairs and watch a public fireworks display. As long as there's enough wind to discourage mosquitoes, of course.

The Lemming notes that today is American Independence Day, the anniversary of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland's publication and Pactum Sicardi, Trois-Rivières founding day, and Ashikaga Yoshiakira's birthday.

A whole bunch of other stuff happened, too, but the Lemming figured that was enough history for one post.

Speaking of rabbits, the Lemming strongly advises against using furry animals as launch supports for bottle rockets. The animals don't like it, singed fur smells bad, and they're nowhere near as steady as a bottle. Un-furry animals aren't much better, really, now that the Lemming considers the matter.

Oddly enough, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission does not warn against lighting firecrackers in one's nose, or eating lit sparklers.

They do, however, seem to think that bottle rockets shouldn't be associated with bottles ("...never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers) — which inspired the Lemming's effort to prevent a serious human-rabbit misunderstanding.

A bit more seriously, here's what the USCPSC says about not visiting the emergency room for the holiday:
"Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day. Yet, the thrill of fireworks can also bring pain. 230 people on average go the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday."

"Remember, fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burn and eye injuries. You can help us prevent fireworks-related injuries and deaths. How? By working with a national, state or local organization where you live to promote fireworks safety in your community."

"Follow these safety tips when using fireworks:
  • "Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • "Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
  • "Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
  • "Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • "Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • "Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • "Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • "Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • "Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
  • "After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
  • "Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them."
(Fireworks Information Center, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)
That's remarkably sensible advice, actually.

The Lemming is forgetting something important. Let's see — the stove isn't running but the refrigerator is, a stitch in time still saves nine, AHA! July fourth is Rube Goldberg's birthday!
