Happy New Year 2015!

Most of the time, the Lemming is chatty, verbose, loquacious — talkative, in a word.

But not tonight. Happy new year, and good night.

Happy New Year, 2014

By the time you read this, the Lemming will probably be asleep. Then again, maybe it would be fun to check in and see if this chap got 'high score' yet:

Oh, right. Earth's gone around Sol again. Happy New Year!

New Year's Eve Celebration, and How to Survive It

"New Year's Eve Survival Guide"
Karlie Pouliot, FoxNews.com (December 29, 2011)

"New Year's Eve is not only one of the biggest nights of the year – but it can also be one of the most expensive if you're not careful. Believe me, my husband and I have made our share of pricey mistakes in the past. Just a few years ago, we were ringing in the New Year with friends in New York City, and had plenty of “backup” cash at the beginning of the night, but that quickly changed after we got overly excited and ordered a few too many bottles of champagne.

"You know how it goes when everyone is feeling all festive. The drinks are flowing and so is the money.

"Mistake No. 1: Ordering a bottle of champagne without looking at the price on the menu...."

The article is a pretty good common-sense guide for folks who go out on the town on New Year's Eve. Some of the advice is economic: like the 'champagne' anecdote. Which reminds the Lemming of the old saying: "If you have to ask, you can't afford it."

Moving on.

The next item was about economics and pedicabs: "a tricycle (usually propelled by pedalling); used in the Orient for transporting passengers for hire." (Princeton's WordNet) It's a sort of next-generation rickshaw, and apparently it isn't 'demeaning' to earn a living with one these days. And that's another topic.

The rest is a sort of Q and A, done in collaboration with New York Magazine's nightlife editor, Vanita Salisbury. It gives advice on champagne, taxis, designated drivers, more champagne, wine, still more champagne, bars, dinner, hors d'oeuvres, and why you should carry lots of cash.

Drink - WATER?!

There's also, mercifully, this paragraph:

"...Remember to drink water. This serves three purposes: 1. You consume less booze, thereby spending less cash 2. You stay hydrated 3. You'll temper the massive hangover that will inevitably come the next day. You can find some tips for dealing with hangovers here...."

With respect to the long-standing tradition of getting bombed, boozed, buzzed, inebriated, loaded, looped, muddled, plastered, potted, sloppy, smashed, tanked, three sheets to the wind, and sincerely under the influence, on the night of December 31: the Lemming suggests that waking up with hairy eyeballs and a furry tongue may not be worth it.

There's the 'never touch the stuff' approach. And that old standby: know your limit, and stay under it. Designated drivers are a good idea, too. Nothing takes the shine off a celebration quite like ending up in a morgue.

The Lemming on New Year's Eve

On most New Year's Eves, the Lemming joins the noisy throng in New York City's Times Square, and watches the big Waterford crystal ball go down. Virtually joins the throng that is: via television.

It's a great deal less expensive, much less chilly, and probably as much fun as actually being there. For the Lemming. Quite a few folks seem to prefer being there, physically.

Apart from a virtual trip to the Big Apple, the Lemming may call up some recorded entertainment, sit back, and remember the will be that was. That would make a great title for a book: and did, back in 1987. And that's another topic.

Remembering the will be that was.

Lemming Tracks: Happy New Year, 2011!

A few minutes ago, the Lemming watched New York City's Times Square and the New Year's Eve party going on there. The folks there seemed to be having a good time.

And the Lemming thinks it's just about as much fun to watch, from a distance of about 1,000 miles: and a whole lot less tiring. It may be noteworthy that the Times Square crowd seemed to a relatively youthful bunch: mostly from late teens to thirty-something.

"Youthful," of course, being a relative term. By now, from the Lemming's point of view, quite a few folks look like "kids."

New posts are on the way: most likely starting tomorrow morning.

Or, rather, later this morning.

The New Year's Eve Bullet, and Some Reminiscing

"How drunk do you have to BE, Lamar?"
Oddly Enough, Reuters blog (August 24, 2010)

".So Doc, tell me. How did the operation go to remove that cyst? I feel great!

"Well Lamar, surprisingly it wasn't a cyst at all. It was a bullet, lodged right there in your head, I'd say for five or six years. You've been carrying it around all this time.

"A bullet, huh? I'll be! I guess that would be from a New Year's Eve party.

"What? How do you know that, Lamar?..."

The rest of that Oddly Enough post is - well, pretty much what you'd expect. Whether or not you think it's funny depends on your sense of humor.

Although Oddly Enough's author went a bit past what was in the news: he didn't have to stray too far to make the situation sound, well, odd.

That photo, of an x-ray, is legit, and from a Bochum Police handout, via Reuters.

The constabulary in that German town is taking that bullet seriously. Finding out who pulled the trigger probably won't happen - and besides, they're assuming that it was an accident.

Just the same, according to The Local, they're going to try to convince folks in their area that it's not a good idea to load a gun, and then yourself, at a party.
In the news:

"Bullet found in man's head years after drunken New Year's Eve"
The Local (Germany's News in English) (August 24, 2010)

"A 35-year-old man in North Rhine-Westphalia has lived for the past several years unaware a bullet became lodged in his head one drunken New Year's Eve, police told The Local on Tuesday.

"The Polish construction worker in Herne doesn't quite remember whether it was in 2004 or 2005, but he does recall feeling a forceful blow to the back of his head around midnight as he celebrated in the city centre, said Bochum police spokesman Volker Schütte.

"He recently noticed a cyst on his head and went to the Herne hospital, where X-rays revealed the culprit – a 22-calibre bullet lodged in his scalp.

" 'He must really have a strong constitution,' said Schütte, who spoke with the patient while he recovered in the hospital following an operation on Friday. 'He was of course intoxicated at the time he felt the blow. It was New Year's Eve so naturally he'd had a bit more than usual to drink.'..."

Seriously? The Lemming is glad that the fellow got that bullet out of his scalp. Another news report had someone speculating that the bullet might have been fired in the air, and hit him on the way down: which would explain why it stopped where it did.

The Lemming's also not going to go into the conventional hand-wringing over the dangers of guns or Demon Rum, or New Year's Eve parties.

Come to think of it, I haven't heard about Demon Rum for a long time.

It's not that the Lemming is apathetic - I've explained that before - it's just that I think that guns and beer aren't problems: it's the folks who can't handle guns and beer, at least not at the same time.

Which reminds me of another story. This one's true:

Auld Lang Syne: Thank You, Robert Burns

"Auld lang syne"
Courtenay Bartholomew
Trinidad and Tobago Express (December 31, 2008)

"Exactly one week after the celebration of a special birth, tonight we will be celebrating the demise of one year and the birth of a new year. In days of yore, for many the venue was the same - a church or cathedral, but the Midnight Mass of Christmas was not ushered in with thunderous applause and revelry. It was a solemn affair of thanksgiving and the entrance hymn was "Gloria in excelsis Deo'', giving glory to the newborn King on high...."

This is a somewhat cerebral discourse on the history and meaning of Robert Burn's poem "Auld Lang Syne:" and, I think, worth the reading.

Better Ideas From New York City:
New Year's Wishes Online

"New Year's Wishing Wall Online" -

The New Year's Eve party at Times Square, New York, has something new this year. You can have a message printed on a piece of that colorful confetti. If you're in New York City, there's a place at the Times Square Information Center to drop off a message.

For people like me, who aren't likely to be within a thousand miles of Manhattan, theres the "New Year's Wishing Wall Online."

I've left a wish: "May leaders act with wisdom and compassion." It may sound corny, but who knows: That message might start someone thinking.

"Times Square Alliance," "The Official Website of Times Square," is involved with the Wishing Wall Online.

New Year Tech: New Lights Over Times Square

"Times Square Alliance - New Year's Eve Ball"

The big ball over Times Square will be twice as bright, more colorful (16 million colors), and a lot more efficient than last year's. The Waterford crystal ball has LEDs inside now, and takes about as much power as a kitchen oven.
