"Metropolis," Plus 120 Years

"Under a perfect economical system of production and distribution, and a system combining the greatest elements of progress, there can be only one city on a continent, and possibly only one in the world. There would be outlying groups of buildings in different sections of the country for the accommodation of those who were, for limited periods, in the field of labor, and also others that would be occupied as resorts of pleasure in season; but the great and only 'Metropolis' would be the home of the people...."

A major problem with this proposal is in the third word of the first paragraph. It's been the Lemming's experience that humans don't do "perfect." "Not bad," "it'll do," "it could be worse," yes: "perfect," no.

To Mr. Gillette's credit, he realized that a city needs power: which is why his Metropolis was set east of Niagara Falls. Humans still draw energy from water flowing downhill, which helps explain Las Vegas. As usual, where humans are involved, it's more complicated than that.

"...The Whole World Would Contribute...."


"...Here should be located the great central city, which would be the home of all; and to the artistic beauty, grandeur, and magnificence of this wonderful production of the combined intelligence of a united people, the whole world would contribute its wealth and treasures...."

King C. Gillette was a smart man. He invented a very practical safety razor — he's that Gillette — and put quite a bit of thought into the physical design of his Metropolis.

He was also a utopian socialist, and thought all industry in the United States should be owned by one company, with everyone living in one city.

Bear in mind that this was back in the 19th century: long before anyone tried putting his nifty ideas into practice.

It's possible to build a city in some arbitrary spot, and make it work. Brasília, for example, is east of the Tocantins River headwaters, more or less, because Brazil's national government said that's where the country's capital should be.

Most cities, though, grow where humans are getting something done. Some of Earth's largest cities are break-in-bulk points, where humans haul stuff from one form of transportation to another.

That's why humans have been building at Londinium for some 10,000 years now. The locals are calling it "London" now, and it'll probably be a population center 10,000 years from now.

Crossroads are another favorite, and some cities grow because there's a valuable natural resource nearby that's needed for some industry.

But enough about real cities. Let's look at Gillette's Metropolis again.

"Sitting Rooms" and a Zigzag Outer Wall

Most American houses and apartments don't have "sitting rooms" these days, but Gillette's floor plan has features that could be used today.

That zigzag outer wall, for example, gives each apartment a dozen windows on the side walls: without having tenants staring into the neighbor's home.

Gillette's paper showed how these huge apartment blocks could be built, one tower at a time: presumably with the central dome added after the ring was complete.

Social and economic aspects aside, Gillette's residential blocks strike the Lemming as having workable features. That hundred-yard-tall domed atrium could be a really nice feature this time of year: where the Lemming lives, in Minnesota.

On the other hand, one of those 25-story apartment buildings would have 450 units. At six people per unit, that's 2,700 folks living in one building. Two of them would have room for everyone living in the Lemming's town, with room left over.

It's a little hard to imagine a good reason for going to the trouble of building something that size here, though.

London: Holborn Overhaul and De-Fencing the Street

"[First look] Terry Farrell and Partners has revealed his masterplan to revamp the Holborn, Bloomsbury and St Giles areas of London

"Re-branded 'Midtown', the district is expected to undergo major regeneration with the arrival of Crossrail in 2018.

"Farrell's vision centres on the area's three major hubs: St Giles Circus, Holborn Crossroads and Holborn Circus – setting out roadmap for improving public realm, the urban environment and pedestrian and transport congestion.

"Proposals include phasing out High Holborn's one-way system, creating new pedestrian crossings and expanding the cycle network.

"Tass Mavrogordato, chief executive of project-backer InMidtown BID, said: 'We will be more impacted than anywhere else by the opening of London's two biggest Crossrail stations in Farringdon and Tottenham Court Road...."

That aerial view of Farrell's proposed London makeover is an attractive picture.

Making a nifty picture is one thing, planning a detailed renovation of even part of a city is something else. The Lemming didn't know whether this was one of those visionary projects that nobody really expects to work: or something that Londoners could actually use.

As it turns out, project planners seem quite serious about Farrell's St. Giles Circus — Holborn Crossroads — Holborn Circus project.

Trees, Umbrellas, and No Fences in the Streeet

Judging from those before-and-after pictures from the Architects Journal article, it looks like Farrell's idea is to take some of the fences out of the street, add trees, and set up a sidewalk cafe or two.

The sidewalk cafe may or may not work out; the trees look nice, but will need watering; and — how did anyone think that putting fences in a street was a good idea in the first place?!

No matter. Another four years, and at least one London street can be used as a street again. That's progress, the Lemming supposes.

Students and Duluth City Planning: Fresh Ideas

Martin Meyer, a graduate student in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, describes his group's proposal to create ramps to the ore docks to connect with other city trails along the waterfront. He was one of 36 students presenting ideas to Duluth officials Wednesday at Clyde Ironworks. "Imagine waking up in your bedroom in what had been an idle ore dock on Duluth's waterfront - with stores, offices and restaurants down the hall and an outdoor skating arena just outside your door.

"Imagine turning an abandoned granite quarry in West Duluth into a world-class ice-climbing destination and speed-skating oval....

"...An effort by 36 graduate students in the University of Minnesota's College of Design did more than just imagine those scenarios - they spent the fall quarter of their final year in school designing and planning the projects. On Wednesday, the grad students in architecture and landscape architecture showed Duluth civic and business leaders what the finished projects might look like...."

Duluth, Minnesota, across from Superior, Wisconsin, is half of a port city at the west end of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Taconite pellets get transferred from rail cars to ore carriers on a series of huge ore docks. One of those docks isn't in use.

Some See Ore-Loading Chutes - - -

Some of the students saw that expanse of unused ore dock, and started thinking. They propose "...transforming the massive structure of wood and steel into a multi-use destination with condos, shops and public recreation space. Their concept even turns the giant ore-loading chutes into bleachers for an outdoor skating arena...."

Others have plans for parts of Duluth that are unused or hard to maintain. Then there's old Casket Quarry in West Duluth. It's already being used for ice climbing - unofficially. What some students suggest is officially recognizing what's already being done, and re-engineering the place a bit.

Sounds like a plan to the Lemming.

Lemming Tracks: Designing Better Street Lighting

"In cities around the world, telling a child, 'I used to see stars from my backyard,' may soon sound as credible as, 'I used to walk 10 miles to school in 6-foot-high snowdrifts uphill in both directions.' Sky glow, light pollution, and light trespass are the consequences of development and outgrowth in urban and rural landscapes. The damage isn't merely aesthetic. Research suggests that excess night light can harm nearly everything living under the sun. The offender may be as simple as stadium lights fatally mistaken by fledgling birds for the moon, or the neighbor's porch light that beams into your bedroom, resulting in fatigue and diminished productivity...."

What the Lemming noticed second about this article was the long paragraphs. If this wasn't written for and published in an ink-and-paper magazine, and then posted: It's the Lemming's guess that it was written by someone who learned the craft before the Information Age started.

So did the Lemming: and that's another topic.

The first thing the Lemming noticed was that this is another 'light pollution' article. These have been popping up at intervals for years. Some make sense, some tell more about the author than the subject, a few make good points.

This one, in the Lemming's opinion, makes sense. And makes good points.

Another trio of massive paragraphs, then the Lemming will opine.

Gigawatt-Hours, IDA, and Tradeoffs

"...The amount of energy and money expended to illuminate what is essentially water vapor and floating particulates in our atmosphere is not trivial. According a 2009 document published by the nonprofit International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), the U.S. expends 22,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity—the equivalent of 3.6 million tons of coal—each year in light pollution. At the rate of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, this energy translates to $2.2 billion annually....

"...In the past half-century, the light source of choice for streets and parking lots was high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, which included mercury vapor and low-pressure sodium lamps, but mostly the ubiquitous yellow-orange high-pressure sodium (HPS)....

"...It is difficult to design optics that can control stray uplight and glare without significant tradeoffs in luminaire efficiency. Despite their notoriously poor color rendering, HPS lamps are inexpensive, can last up to 24,000 hours, and output a lot of light initially; the output declines as they age. In the last 30 years, the use of metal halide, an HID source that produces whiter light than HPS, has increased, but HPS still dominates...."

This article gets points for discussing the technologies involved in outdoor lighting, the legal and regulatory situations: and, particularly, the awkward economic decisions folks need to make.

Is sky glow a real problem? Even though the Lemming's read some angst-filled articles about frightfully vital wildlife, and slightly-restrained rants by amateur astronomers who can't see through the haze overhead: yes, the Lemming thinks there's a real problem here.

Maybe not on the 'and we're all gonna die' level: but it does look like human beings are designed with 24-hour lighting cycle in mind: one where the lights are out for several hours each night. Humans are adaptable critters, and can survive bright light 24-7: but they do seem to thrive better with regular darkness.

Amateur Astronomers and the Asteroid Patrol

At the risk of being overly dramatic, the Lemming thinks it's prudent to recall that the bit of debris that upset the dinosaur's world wasn't alone.

Amateur astronomers often are the first to notice some new bit of cosmic stuff swinging by Earth's neighborhood. Most new asteroids and comets don't come particularly close to this planet. A few do.

And, every once in a while, one of their orbits gets them up close and personal with Earth. When that happens, something like the Tunguska event happens.

So far, humans have been lucky. The explosions haven't happened near cities. Of course, there are a few ancient civilizations that simply stopped being there: and that's probably another topic.

Right now, there's a chance that an amateur astronomer would notice something big enough to make an inconvenient gap in, say the eastern seaboard. Before it got so close that everybody could see it. For a few seconds, anyway.

Here is where 'light pollution,' sky glow, whatever comes in. All amateur astronomers that the Lemming knows about are on Earth. If the sky gets so bright at night that they can't 'see out:' well, we could lose more than some really good science.

Enough said.

On the 'up' side, quite a few folks have been working at finding practical solutions to bright city skies.

New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art Makeover, et Les Mots Français (Mais Oui!)

Ah, l'éclat, le mot français, le côté prétentieux! C'est magificent!

Now that the Lemming has got that out of his system, here's some fairly interesting news from the shining center of all universes. (Ask any New Yorker.)

Getting a Plaza with Pizzazz?

"More than 40 years after its last makeover, the plaza in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is showing its age: the fountains are leaking, the sidewalk is crumbling, and the trees are dying. Overcrowding on the institution's grand front steps - one of the most popular meeting places in Manhattan - often causes bottlenecks for visitors trying to get to the front door.

"Now an ambitious plan is in the works to transform this four-block-long stretch along Fifth Avenue, from 80th to 84th Street, into a more efficient, pleasing and environmentally friendly space, with new fountains, tree-shaded allées, seating areas, museum-run kiosks and softer, energy-efficient nighttime lighting...."

En France, l'un des mots pour passerelles est allées.

The Lemming is grateful that there weren't more les mots français strewn around the article. Les gens continuent d'utiliser des mots français dans un effort pour paraître socialement supérieur? Incroyable!

Dropping back into the low-class habit of picking one language, and sticking with it, the Lemming continues.

"Allées" is one of the French words for "walkways," by the way.

Hey! This Makes Sense!

"...'Our first priority is to create an appropriate entrance to the greatest encyclopedic museum in the world, one that is attractive and welcoming rather than austere and forbidding,' said Thomas P. Campbell, the Met's director and chief executive. At the moment, he added, 'the plaza is a frying pan in the summer and a wind tunnel in the winter.' The museum will stay open during construction, although parts of the sidewalk may be closed at times...."

The article didn't have the most promising lead paragraph. Apart from some unnecessarily obfuscatory erudition, the complaint seemed to be that "one of the most popular meeting places in Manhattan" had:
  • Leaky fountains
  • Dying trees
  • Crumbling sidewalks
On top of all that, this popular place was overcrowded.

The Lemming thought that someone in the Big Apple might have gotten tired of the riffraff cluttering up the entrance to the Met. Not knowing Museum Mile first-hand, the Lemming assumed that folks hung out on or near the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art because they liked it there. Even if the place wasn't in like-new condition.

From what Thomas P. Campbell says, it looks like the hoipolloi have picked a remarkably uncomfortable spot to spend time in. Which makes the Lemming wonder why so many folks enjoy spending time there.

Let's hope that the 'new and improved' Met entrance leaves some room for the lower 90 percent. Or that there's a viable alternative to the steps of the Met.

Paris, New York City, and Victorian Niceties

"Niceties?!" No, that doesn't mean 'modest flannel nighties." Niceties are "conformity with some esthetic standard of correctness or propriety," or "a subtle difference in meaning or opinion or attitude." (Princeton's ) The second definition is sort of like "nuances," but with one more letter.

If the Lemming's memory serves, socially ambitious Americans used to make sure that folks heard them using French words. That was the 19th century, when America was still dealing with unfinished business from the colonial days. It took a major war to sort that out, and that's another topic.

Back then, France was sort of like today's New York City: a big, important place. And Paris - well, it was PARIS.

That was then, this is now.

By the last half of the 20th century, gratuitously shoving French into a sentence had gotten to be a joke. Think Miss Piggy, of the "Muppet Show."

More than a decade into the 21st century, either "allées" is what just simply everybody says when they mean "walkways:" Or someone didn't get the memo about changing their calendar. Or maybe there's something else going on.

Anyway, if the Metropolitan Museum of Art let groundskeeping and maintenance slide, and the place is as hideously uncomfortable as Mr. Campbell says it is: maybe tearing out what they've got and starting over makes sense.

Houston, Texas; Civic Pride; Futuristic Architecture; and Admiral Horatio Nelson

"Houston METRO and the Downtown District revealed the finalists in a design competition for Central Station — a new light rail transfer hub that will be built on Main between Capitol and Rusk at the intersection of the upcoming East End and Southeast lines.

"Two stops originally planned for the 600 and 800 blocks of Main were consolidated to create Central Station, which will sit at the center of a busy new transfer area at the heart of METRO's light rail system. For such a prominent location, architects plan to give the new station a landmark treatment.

"A panel of Houston leaders including deans Patricia Oliver and Sarah Whiting of the University of Houston and Rice University architecture schools, respectively, pared down a list of nearly 70 internationally-recognized firms to five high-profile candidates...."

There's a slide show with the article that shows the five proposals. One of them, Denari Architects', is a fairly bright shade of red. That one would definitely stand out. The others aren't quite so colorful: either the finished product is intended to be a sort of pale gray/white, or that's the way architects' renderings are done these days.

This, in the Lemming's opinion, is the most emphatically "futuristic" of the lot. Looks pretty cool, and might be practical.

What's With "Trafalgar Square?"

That reference to Trafalgar Square gets explained about two thirds of the way through the article:

"...'Central Station will be the centerpiece of an area where people in the city collect,' he said, referencing London's Trafalgar Square and New York's Washington Square Park. 'Areas like this are often marked with an architectural element, something that celebrates the space.'..."

They could just as well have used Union Station (Washington D.C.), Union Station (Kansas City), or Union Station (Chicago), as a comparison. "Trafalgar Square" is a tad more distinctive, though, and doesn't take any more syllables to say: although it's three letters longer.

"Trafalgar Square" in the headline had the Lemming wondering if Houston planned to put a whacking great column with the statue of some admiral on top, and that's almost another topic.

Ohio City Dusting Off 1978 Restoration Plan

"In 1978, the city of Athens [Ohio] adopted a plan outlining revitalization guidelines meant to maintain the historical integrity of the buildings uptown and encourage restoration.

"It's been known as the 'Zarney plan,' named after the principle citizen who put it together, Kim Zarney. Now, City Planner Paul Logue is working on an update.

" 'I've been working with an intern, Jia Li - a recent (Ohio University) grad in urban planning - to update this plan,' he said Friday. 'Jia spent a great deal of time stitching together photos of the buildings in the downtown district as they look now and then we will compare them as they exist now to how they looked in the Zarney plan images and also compare what's been done to what was recommended in that plan.'..."

The idea, apparently, is to have at least part of downtown Athens, Ohio, look something like the way it did a century ago: and still be practical as an early-21st-century downtown street.

It's not just nostalgia, though. The Zarney plan seems to have acknowledged that folks are going to have to live in - and look at - the 'restored' area:

"...'Every effort should be made to preserve the inherently lively and varied forms present within this block,' the plan states about the area between Union Street and Carpenter Street...."

"...the goal of the committee was to increase public awareness and appreciation of the architectural history of the uptown area. And that's what the goal of updating the plan is as well...."

The Lemming remembers the days when folks were getting fed up with Modern developments. Maybe you've seen pictures of them: lots of concrete, lots of glass, vast stretches of not much of anything. Some of those buildings might have looked better if someone had decided to leave the scaffolding in place. And that's another topic.

Back to Athens, Ohio.

The Zarney plan's restoration program was supposed to focus on architectural design of buildings.

"...'The majority of the buildings in (uptown) Athens were built around the turn-of-the-century,' he [Community Design, Incorporated, chair John M. Jones] wrote in April 1978. 'The theme for our improvement design calls for restoring these buildings back to their original architectural design.'

"He wrote that the goal of the committee was to increase public awareness and appreciation of the architectural history of the uptown area. And that's what the goal of updating the plan is as well...."

Sounds like a good idea. Most folks probably won't become sophisticated connoisseurs of early-20th-century architecture. But the Lemming figures that most folks can tell the difference between 'lets make a fast buck' buildings and well-designed ones. And would rather live in a place that doesn't seem intended to bore the senses.

Minneapolis Skyways: Warm Winter Walking

"The Minneapolis Skyway System is an interlinked collection of enclosed pedestrian footbridges that connects various buildings in Downtown Minneapolis enabling people to walk in a climate-controlled environment. The extensive system is renowned as the largest continuous system in the world,[1] and is compared to the underground cities of Houston, Texas, and Canadian cold-weather cities Toronto and Montreal.[2]

"The system forms a network of climate-controlled, pedestrian walkways that link sixty-nine full city blocks over seven miles (11 km).[3]..."

From the Lemming's point of view, Minneapolis is 'down south,' and that's almost another topic.

The Minneapolis skyway system makes sense here in Minnesota, where words like "winter" and "cold" have a different meaning than they do in, say, San Diego. Or Brazilia.

St. Paul, Minnesota, across the river from Minneapolis, has a skyway system, too. And, until 2001, had an indoor city park. And that is another topic. As the Wikipedia article said, cities that have enclosed and climate-controlled pedestrian areas aren't all that uncommon. Not in North America, anyway.

One of the Wikipedia map links still works, but another fell victim to website 'improvements' since it was posted. After a little nosing around, the Lemming found two useful maps on the Minneapolis city website. (ci.minneapolis.mn.us) Since there's no telling how long those URLs will be useful, the Lemming archived both maps on a stable website:

Urban Trees: It's Not Just Dutch Elm Disease

"St. Paul forestry crews are removing around two hundred ash trees in the city's Highland Park area. Crews are trying to slow the spread of the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect known for spreading like wildfire and killing ash trees. The trees here are not believed to be infested with EAB, but many of them are unhealthy and easy targets for the insect.

"Jenny Mertha snapped a few photos to capture the green canopy, above Hamline Avenue in St. Paul. The ash trees along her boulevard are set to be cut down. Mertha said, 'It is a big part of the character when you drive down Hamline.'

"Since crews first spotted the ash borer back in St. Paul's St. Anthony Park neighborhood the Spring of 2009, workers have chopped down 800 public ash trees. The city hopes to remove and replace a total of 1,100 by next year...."

Here in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, it's mostly elm trees that get tagged for removal: we're near the front of the Dutch elm disease wave. The lesson, as I see it, is that as permanent as trees seem: they're growing organisms that will eventually die and need to be replaced.

Attack of the Alien Squirrels!

"Saving the imperiled Garry oak trees found on the prairies and oak woodlands of South Sound may require a new attitude toward non-native eastern gray squirrels, according to Sound arborist Ray Gleason.

"Gleason, owner of Cascade Tree Experts, has found several examples of Garry oaks in the Black Lake area south of Tumwater filled with dead, small-diameter branches.

"The culprits appear to be eastern gray squirrels, flocking to the trees to eat gall wasp larvae known to infest oak trees.

"The squirrels strip the bark off the branches in search of the larvae. In some cases, they're doing enough damage to threaten the long-term health of the native oak trees, Gleason said.

"Gleason wants to get the following message out to the public, especially those who feed eastern gray squirrels in their backyards:

" 'If you want to save the oak trees, you need to stop feeding and encouraging the squirrels,' he said...."

What's with that "alien squirrels" in my heading? Those eastern gray squirrels aren't native to the Seattle area.

Looks like folks in the Seattle area have a tough choice: save the trees, or feed the squirrels. It's not as easy as it may seem: those nibblers are appealing, engaging little critters.

New York City: 18th Century Ship Dug Up

"Workers at the World Trade Center site are excavating a 32-foot-long ship hull that apparently was used in the 18th century as part of the fill that extended lower Manhattan into the Hudson River.

"It's hoped the artifact can be retrieved by the end of the day on Thursday, said archaeologist Molly McDonald. A boat specialist was going to the site to take a look at it...."

"...The archaeologists are racing to record and analyze the vessel before the delicate wood, now exposed to air, begins to deteriorate.

" 'I kept thinking of how closely it came to being destroyed, [archaeologist A. Michael] Pappalardo said.

"A 1797 map shows that the excavation site is close to where Lindsey's Wharf and Lake's Wharf once projected into the Hudson, the New York Times reported."

There's more to the article: including a photo of what's left of the ship.

Researchers plan to analyze the timbers to get a better idea of how old the wood is. A 100-pound anchor was found nearby, but that might have been from another ship.

A few cubic yards of rotting wood may not seem like much: but archaeologists can pull a lot of information out of an artifact like that. And, working with historians, fill in some of the blanks in our understanding of New York City's history.

America's urban settlements are nowhere near as old as Europe's: but people have been building fairly extensive towns and cities on the east coast for several hundreds of years now. We don't have anything with quite the romantic appeal of the sewers of Paris, yet: but we're working on it.

Architects, City Planning, Le Corbusier, Pulp Fiction, The Masses, The City of the Future, and Me

There's more, of interest to architects, venture capitalists, building contractors, and other people whose lives are directly affected by the building industry: but not many other folks.

The Art! The Vision! The Accounts-Receivable!

It's easy to forget, particularly reading some of the more breathless treatises on the art and vision of architecture, to remember that architects are people with bills to pay and food to buy, just like almost everybody else.

Don't get me wrong: I like those 'breathless treatises,' like books with photos of Paolo Soleri's archologies, and drawings of Le Corbusier's ideal city. I think there's room for imagination and art in the design of buildings and cities.

While I'm thinking of it, a few decades ago I ran into an article about Paolo Soleri's archologies, that cleared up a point for me.

I'd seen photos of the models Soleri had made of projects like his 'hexahedron arcology,' and other very-large-scale structures shaped more-or-less like Platonic solids. And was amazed at how bright they were inside, just from sunlight. (The sample here is more 'realistically' lighted) Also, how people and materials could move in and out of the places. (Cities aren't closed systems - there's a lot of traffic in and out. We call the result of insufficiently-planned transportation systems "traffic jams.")

According to the article (which, alas! I haven't been able to re-locate), Paolo Soleri's genius at designing those radiant cities of the future was due largely to the work of his assistant, who was very skilled at unobtrusively lighting up the shadowy interiors. Oh, well. That, indirectly, answered my question about transportation systems in the archologies, too. (From the selection of graphics on the Arcosanti website, it looks like Soleri's followers have caught on, and adopted a rather more realistic style of presentation.)

I still think they look cool, though.

Le Corbusier was a professional architect, who was quite capable of designing structures that people could use. Like this chapel.

Le Corbusier had high ideals and vision, too. And some definite ideas about what the City of the Future should be like.

A less reverent approach, written by someone who's lived in the future that visionaries like Le Corbusier helped create, wrote this:

"If you wanted to define the theory of modern architecture at its purest you could do worse than "A Contemporary City of Three Million" from 1923 by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (1887-1965) aka "Le Corbusier." "...Look at this city. The buildings are all straight lines and boxes. They stand perched on columns for no good reason. Nothing gives any impression of being handmade that can't be stamped out by a machine. Craftsmanship is nowhere to be found, because only the bourgeoisie can afford craftsmen. Everything is concrete, glass, steel, and stucco. No colours are used when white, grey, black, or beige are available. Functionalism is everything, right down to the sheer facades. There are no eaves and the roof is inevitably flat. Never mind that flat roofs leak, are structurally weaker than peaked roofs, harder to construct, and tend to collapse under heavy loads of snow. Or that the lack of eaves mean that the rain is free to cascade down the sides of the buildings until the concrete becomes a mottled grey mess like fish fillets that have been left out on the doorstep overnight. Me? I think the Le Corbusier Contemporary City looks cool, in a sort of sensory-deprivation, Planet of the Faceless People sort of way. Not to worry, though: this vast expanse of storage units for humans was where the workers would live, in Le Corbusier's grand plan.

Back to that excerpt:

"...Yes, Le Corbusier expected the masses to live in these giant concrete hives in flats stripped bare of any ornaments or colour and when they finally manage to escape from their warrens they have nothing to look forward to except empty spaces between the buildings and the the most dangerous aerodrome in history slapped smack in the middle of the mall just to confuse people and keep the neighbours awake.

"Fortunately, nobody would touch Le Corbusier's project with a bargepole, so civilisation was spared a very expensive demolition bill decades later."

Actually, not quite. Remember Chicago's Cabrini Green? The Chicago History Museum concedes that the 20th century's great works didn't do much, other than provide employment for construction workers and conservation of the area's high crime rate. CBS News did a fairly good 'sic transit gloria mundi' piece a few years ago. "Tearing Down Cabrini-Green," CBS News (July 23, 2003)) As I recall, it wasn't until the last few decades that the majority of large-scale buildings were designed so that you could easily find the entrance. Le Corbusier was a quite competent architect - I suppose he shouldn't be blamed for so many others taking his ideas at face value.

As the introduction to "Tomorrow's Skyline" in Tales of Future Past put it:

"When you're talking about the skyline of tomorrow, you're up against two schools of thought. The first is that of the 'serious' architects-- the sort Modernist dreamers that did away with all that bourgeois ornamentation and obsolete classical nonsense in favour of good, clean lines suitable for the enlightenment of the proletariat who didn't know what was good for them...."

"...It's all horrible, so why do it? Because it was all so anti-bourgeois and it was the sort of place where, in the words of Alexi Sayle, 'They expected working class people to wander around discussing Chekhov.'..."

After living among human beings for about a half-century, I've come to conclusion that not everyone is alike. I also think that, apart from a certain utility for labeling, class distinctions aren't what the used to be. Assuming that they ever were a particularly accurate way of sorting out humanity.

Take me, for example. As far as income goes, I'm somewhere at or below the bottom of the lower middle class in American society. There are people who would taste the bitter dregs of despair if they'd had a life like mine. In terms of income, these days I'm definitely of The Masses. ("Lemming Tracks: Lower Middle Class and Loving It" (December 14, 2009) - but I haven't been L.M.C. for a few years now)

I don't make - or spend - all that much money, but I might "wander around discussing Chekhov." (Anton Chekhov, or Pavel Chekov, depending on whether we were talking about method acting and short stories, or Star Trek)
City of the Future: Modernist Building Blocks, or - - -
A quick recap. That "Tomorrow's Skyline" intro said:

"When you're talking about the skyline of tomorrow, you're up against two schools of thought. The first is that of the 'serious' architects-- the sort Modernist dreamers...."

Then, there's the other sort of City of the Future:

"...The other school came from the wild and free imaginations of the pulp magazine artists. These underpaid, underappreciated toilers in the fields of lurid fiction weren't concerned about making a great social statement in steel and glass, but in meeting their deadlines and collecting their meagre fees. Their school wasn't an allegiance to Bauhaus or Dada, but to spectacle, unbridled enthusiasm-- and rocket ships on the roof...."

As you see, some of those pulp artists nailed the look of a City of the Future pretty well. Remember: we're living in The Future of the 1930s and 1940s.

We use helicopters, instead; and the elevated roadways aren't quite so common - yet.
Pulp Magazine Artists, Brasilia, and Architecture for the Real World
Maybe you've seen photos of Brazil's artificial (oops - that's 'planned') city and capital, Brasilia. Like Le Corbusier's Contemporary City, I think it looks cool. A bit inhuman, sort of like a King Kong-sized geometry classroom model, but cool.

I'm interested in city planning, and think it's important to have someone decide where streets will go, how the sewage system should be laid out, and other practical details. I also think that it's important to let the poor shmoos who are going to live in the place have a say - but that's another topic.

That said, I've got some rather boring ideas about what does and doesn't make sense.

For example, those nifty winding streets that have been popular in American suburban development since the sixties? Where streets with names like "Morning Drive" and "Flicker Avenue" meet to become "Riviera Boulevard"? Good luck, finding an address in mazes like that.

I've got the old-fashioned notion that streets and sidewalks exist mostly to get people from one place to another, without getting lost, even when the entire network isn't in perfect working order. For that, it's hard to beat the boring old street grid, where one set of streets and sidewalks runs at right angles to the other - landforms permitting.

Sure, recommending something like that won't get your name in 'Visionary Monthly,' or whatever: but it works.

The grid system works even when repairs or maintenance have to be done. Let's say that a water main springs a leak. With a grid system, part of one block would be dug up - a distinct inconvenience to whoever was facing the leak, but the rest of the folks wouldn't have to do more than jog one block over, drive around the obstruction, and job back.

One of those curlicue street plans? Street work in the wrong place could block access to a whole neighborhood.

The same goes for heavy traffic. If you're driving, you've got the option of staying on the street you're on. But (with a little effort and patience, on multi-lane streets) you also have the option of turning, and taking a parallel street, a block or so over.

Lofty Visions, Utopian Dreams, and Bowling Alleys
One of the few 'what ifs' in my life has been wondering what would have happened if I'd become an architect. I've been interested in the hows and whys of structures that people use since childhood. But then, I've been interested in a whole lot else, too.

Architecture - and city planning, which I see as a closely-related field - is something I've got rather definite ideas about. Well, I didn't become an architect. I became a writer (also a husband, father, and guy who cleans out the drains).

Back to architecture: My hat's off to anyone who has what it takes to design a building that people can use, that stands up to wind, rain, snow, and - sometimes - earthquakes and violent storms. Same goes for city planners who remember that people are actually going to have to use their brainchild.

I think one reason that some of the pulp magazine artists' 'cities of the future' look so much like today's downtown Manhattan - or the Marin County government center - or some other feature in this 'future' that we're living in - is that the pulp artists had a dedication to "spectacle, unbridled enthusiasm-- and rocket ships on the roof."

I think that put them more in touch with the real world than most 'visionaries.'

Spectacle? When someone - commissar, capitalist, or whatever - takes the trouble to pull resources together for a large building, that person will probably want the result to look good. Really good. "Spectacular," if possible.

Enthusiasm? When we're not following some cookie-cutter philosophy of mass-produced housing or commercial development, people are likely to have some level of enthusiasm for what they do. My opinion. Anyway, it'd take a fair amount of enthusiasm for an artist to think up the sort of variety that real cities exhibit.

Rocket ships on the roof? Not so much. Rocket ships make even more noise than airliners when they take off; and turned out to be more useful for traveling to space, than between cities or continents. On the other hand, we do use helicopters quite a bit for point-to-point transportation. And rooftop heliports are fairly common. I think where the great visionaries went wrong was forgetting that people are, well, people: not The Masses. The following examples are from American culture - which is the only one I know well, from the inside.

Some of us like bowling and beer; Others express an aesthetic preference for fine wine and polo.

Some give the impression that they'd rather be dead than caught reading a Stephen King novel, or a Harlequin romance. Others put their money where their interests are; making Stephen King a popular writer, and Harlequin romance stories a durable part of the American cultural landscape.

I don't read Harlequin romances, but I don't dream of a day when they'll be banned.

Or of a polo-free utopia.

Or of a wonderful City of the Future where everyone will walk around, discussing Chekov. Or Chekhov. Or, closer to my heart, be within about fifty paces of an entrance of a massive library.

Come to think of it, the Internet is sort of like a massive library: and I'm there right now.

We're All Alike: Each One of Us is Unique

There's a dusty gag that goes something like this: 'Everybody's the same; we're all alike.' Or maybe it's the other way around.

Architects are people, pretty much like everybody else: except that they've got the native abilities and specialized training it takes to design buildings. The good ones, in my opinion, are those who make beautiful urban sculptures exemplifying some lofty goal - that also makes a practical office building, parking garage, or whatever else the client needs.

City planners? Same comment.

Rio de Janeiro Gets the 2016 Games - Now the Work Begins

"Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee announced Friday.

"The announcement brought tears to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who dabbed his eyes with a handkerchief several times in a news conference afterward.

" 'Our hour has arrived,' he said. 'It has arrived.'

"In Rio, jubilation erupted at the world-famous Copacabana beach, where thousands of people gathered to hear the announcement.

"Rio organizers promised to start working immediately to make the games a success.

" 'Maybe some of the people tomorrow can rest,' said Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman. 'I'm not [resting].'..."

The 2016 games might have been in at Madrid, Spain; or Chicago, Illinois; or Tokyo, Japan. But that's not the way it turned out.

I'm pretty sure there will be Monday-morning-quarterbacking tomorrow, about how it's not fair, and Madrid, or Chicago, or Tokyo - or Khayelitsha, or Palembang, or some other place should have gotten assigned as host.

As it is, folks in Rio have a great excuse to spruce up their city, fix any chronic shortcomings in the city's infrastructure, and put up eye-popping buildings that will draw tourists and business conventions for years - decades, if they do it right - after the games are over.

All in all, sounds good for Rio.

Masdar City Video - Looks Cool

This is a seriously cool video.

A tip of the hat to VL, who left the YouTube URL in a comment in another blog. That comment read, in part: "Masdar City to me is super scary and yet addictive." I think I see what VL meant - but I don't get as excited quite as easily as I once did. I think it has something to do with seeing catchphrases come and go, like:
  • Global warming
  • Communist threat
  • Sustainability
  • National security
  • Climate change
  • Creeping socialism
  • Energy conservation
  • Upward mobility
  • Quality of life
  • The American dream
I'd be a whole lot more worried about global warming, for example, if I didn't know that we're just coming out of - or maybe still in - the most recent of three (or four, depending on who's counting) major glacial periods Earth has experienced. It'd be a bit disturbing if Earth weren't warming up - as was the case when I was in high school. Then, civilization was doomed by the coming ice age.

Not that cities couldn't be engineered better than they are. One of the reasons I like living in a small town in central Minnesota is that the air doesn't make my eyes sting.

If the Masdar Initiative delivers on its promises, it'll be quite a place. The video does a fine job of extolling the virtues of the coming utopia. Just to be picky, I'll mention some things that jumped out at me from the narrative:

Walled City

Masdar will be a walled city: something we haven't seen in Europe for quite a few centuries. Still, I think I see the point, considering the climate and nearby airport.

Zero Carbon Emissions

Phrases like "carbon footprint" and "carbon emissions" are very 'in' just now: like "sustainable." I suppose the Masdar's "zero carbon emissions" don't count the carbon dioxide that human beings emit.

The Ultimate City?

"One day, all cities will be built like this."

I don't doubt that some elements of Masdar City will be employed elsewhere. However, I remember Brasilia.

"New" isn't always "better" - and the control-freak style of city planning that was popular in my youth didn't work out as well as some had hoped.

Shimizu Corporation's Tokyo Bay Mega-City Pyramid on Discovery Channel's Extreme Engineering

"Imagine a three-dimensional city 12 times higher than the Great Pyramid at Giza "floating" over Tokyo Bay, built largely by robots, and housing 750,000 people in skyscrapers dangling from it like fruit on a tree."

It's a visually stunning architectural concept with only one or two serious drawbacks:
  • It requires materials that aren't readily available - yet
  • It's possible that if one of the struts failed, the entire city would go down
The failure scenario is from an unsourced Wikipedia article, so I don't know how seriously to take it.

Discovery.com offers a limited, interactive sample of information from their Extreme Engineering episode: a tour; rotatable view; step-by-step look at how the structure would be built; and "The Big Picture" - a sort of overview, showing how big the thing would be.

What sets this apart from some 'visionary' architectural projects is that Shimizu Corporation is actually in the business of designing buildings. From my point of view, that means that they probably know what they're doing.

Although you can view a distinctly low-quality copy of Discovery Channel's "Extreme Engineering: City in a Pyramid" on YouTube, complete with annoying breaks between segments, I suggest getting the DVD at Discovery Channel's Online Store. They've got the "City in a Pyramid" episode, and fifteen more from the Extreme Engineering series.

Shimizu Corporation's Tokyo Bay Pyramid Impossible? Today, Yes: Soon, Probably Not

What impressed me about the Shimizu Corporation's Tokyo Bay pyramid city was its modular construction. Although the Discovery Channel's Extreme Engineering episode showed the pyramid's frame built first, with buildings added later, I don't see that this is necessarily how a structure like that would need to be built.

In principle, one layer - or even one pyramid segment - at a time could be constructed, with another added as the first was filling up. This would spread construction costs over years - possibly decades - and allow the project to be started without trying to finance the entire structure.

The Shimizu Corporation's pyramid, as envisioned by Shimizu Corporation designers, requires on what is today an exotic material for its framework: carbon nanotubes. To my knowledge, carbon nanotubes are not available for commercial use: not in structures the size of the pyramid's components.

But, that's today.

I've seen exotic materials technologies like liquid crystal displays and fiber optics change from laboratory curiosities to components in consumer products. I can see no reason to assume that, as the U.S. Patent Office commissioner is supposed to have said (but most likely didn't), "Everything that can be invented has been invented." I may not live long enough to see a structure like the Shimizu pyramid completed, but my guess is that my children probably will.

Model Cities Look Great, But I Couldn't Live There

"Michael Chesko is no architect. He's not a structural engineer or an urban planner either. But he just spent more than 2,000 hours constructing this highly detailed, nearly perfect scale model of midtown Manhattan. Chesko cut, sanded, and glued the mini metropolis—now on exhibit at the New York Skyscraper Museum—using only an X-Acto knife, a nail file, and a Dremel (and lots of balsa wood). But the 50-year-old software engineer was having fun; he's been building little cities since he was a kid.

"Model cities aren't just for show; they can have real utility. In 1957...."

There's a video (3:51), which may or may not load in your lifetime, and fifteen photos of model cities. As the article says, they're not just for show. Some are used for engineering studies. City planning is another use.

Cool photos, a video that still hasn't loaded, and background on scale models of cities: this is a pretty good resource.

Eco-Bridge or Not, This Looks Like a Good Idea

"This conceptual proposal for Chicago's Monroe Harbor was designed in honor of the great American architect Daniel Burnham, but perhaps more importantly, to secure Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic games. The proposal is a modern interpretation of Burnam's 1909 master plan for Chicago. In a land locked city, the Chicago Eco-Bridge offers an extension of the landscape that would dramatically change the face of the city, and perhaps the United States...."

The post does a good job of describing this impressive - and ambitious - project, with maps, renderings, and a diagram or two. In one of the renderings, the "central observation tower" looks a lot like Brancusi's "Bird in Space:" on a gargantuan scale. "Chicago Eco-Bridge to 2016" compares it to "a next-generation Statue of Liberty of sorts, welcoming the world once again to America."

That reference to "the great American architect Daniel Burnham" may be a little obscure. From Chicago Park District:

"...Chicago's famous architect and planner Daniel H. Burnham imagined Northerly Island as one of the northernmost points in a series of manmade islands stretching between Grant and Jackson Parks. His vision for this park included lagoons, harbors, beaches, recreation areas, a scenic drive and grand stretches of green space that would provide breathtaking views of the lake and City skyline...."

Northerly Island was the only part of the island chain build, and for a half-century or so it was mostly a small airfield: Meigs Field. Since 1996, Meigs Field has been gone, and Northerly Island is growing into something closer to Burnham's idea.

Dutch Engineers Reducing 1 in 10,000 Chance of Flooding to 1 in 100,000

"On a late fall afternoon on the western edge of the Netherlands, coastal engineer Marcel Stive stands atop a 40-foot dune. He stares out beyond the posse of wet-suit-clad surfers wading into the breakers of the North Sea. Where the surfers see inviting waves, Stive sees dry land—and a distant storm. He points south toward Rotterdam, Europe's busiest port. Arm outstretched, Stive rotates 180 degrees to face the shoreline running north. 'As far as you can see, in both directions, we're going to push the coast out 3, maybe 4, kilometers,' he says. 'We have to—to keep the water out.'...."

Engineers in the Netherlands are quite interested in making sure that the dry land in the country they made stays that way: dry. Particularly the part where Rotterdam is. That city, and the rest of the country that's below sea level, produces about 65% of Holland's GDP.

"...Yet the chance of a breach at Ter Heijde is actually quite low, about 1 in 10,000 in any given year. (In the lingo of storm protection, that's known as a 10,000-year flood.) The coastline and river deltas of the Netherlands are arguably the best-protected lowlands in the world, and the Dutch are a little miffed at Al Gore for suggesting in An Inconvenient Truth that their homeland is as vulnerable to rising seas as far less protected places like Bangladesh and Florida.

"To Stive and other sea-rise hawks, however, 1 in 10,000 has become too risky. They want to crank up defenses in some critical areas to the level of 1 in 100,000. 'To understand risk, you must consider the value of what would be lost,' says Stive...."

Huge Model of Bangkok, Around 2020

The page has a great many photos of the Urban Planning Museum's display, but not a great deal of text. It's worth seeing, though: and is an example of how a picture can be worth a thousand words.
