ZoneAlarm Microsoft Update Cuts Internet Access

It's been an interesting morning, so far.

About an hour ago, I noticed that we didn't have Internet access here.

None.

Definitely not good, particularly with updates coming due and - well, that's my problem, not yours.

If you're reading this, you've solved the problem, or don't have it.

Or, maybe, your ZoneAlarm / Microsoft system hasn't updated yet.

If that's the case, you might be interested in this, from the ZoneAlarm website:

Update (July 9, 2008)

There's more detail, and links, at "Microsoft DNS patch KB951748 incompatible with Zonealarm" (derkeiler.com (July 9, 2008)).

At this point, some online discussions are telling me more about who doesn't like Zone Alarm, and who doesn't like Microsoft, than what's actually going on.

Meanwhile, for the first time, I've uninstalled a Microsoft update. And, hoping for the best.

Update (July 10, 2008)

The 'Updates are ready' icon was in my system tray this morning (I use Windows XP on my 'main computer'). One of them was:

"Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)

"Size: 503 KB - 1.0 MB

A security issue has been identified that could allow a remote attacker to misrepresent a system action or behavior unbeknownst to users on Microsoft Windows systems. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

More information for this update can be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=119620" (That's plain text in the dialog box, of course: but I thought it would be handier, here, as a link.)

That one I'm not re-installing. Not today.

The other is "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)"

This one I'm installing. If I'm not heard from for a while, you'll know why.
Update (July 11, 2008)

Success! Thanks to a heads-up I got in a discussion thread, I learned that Zone Alarm had updated its product so that it would work with that Microsoft update. This morning, I got the new (and improved) Zone Alarm installed, re-installed the troublesome update, and the two got along just fine.
