iPhone 3G - Incredible! Amazing! Stupendous! (WHY?)

"Okay, Apple’s new iPhone 3G officially hits Apple and AT&T retail outlets in the U.S. tomorrow at 8 a.m., and the hysteria has already started. As early as last week, iPhone 3G lines started to form outside the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York. And the hysteria is well worth it…well sort of at least. Among the iPhone 3G’s most exciting hardware upgrades is GPS Technology and its ability to utilize AT&T’s 3G Wireless Network, which is twice as fast as the EDGE network that first-gen iPhones are forced to work on (Note: if the 3G network isn’t available in your area - or on the side of the road you happen to be standing on - the iPhone 3G will...."

The tone is rather breathless, there are three (count them: three) exclamation marks in the title, and a "freerice.com" ad obscures part of the title and the first bit of the post (in my broswer, anyway), but I think this post is worth mentioning.

If for no other reason than to leave a comment as to why you spent what for this household is about a week's food budget on an iPhone 3G. Or, why you didn't.

Or, leave a comment here, answering the same question.

Seriously. I'm curious. What makes this new IPhone 3G so special? I don't mean 'what are the features' - I read about that easily enough - Why is this gizmo such a hot item?

I guess the answer, essentially, is that this is an Apple product and Apple (or rather Steve Jobs) has become the technology community's equivalent of The Beatles. Ever since the iMac was introduced to rave reviews and the original iPod revolutionized (and practically created) the mobile music industry, people have been chomping at the bit to see what Jobs and his crew come up with next. The original iPhone was revolutionary not only in the "complete package" sense, but also in its totally Apple-esque ease of use. Apple has sort of become a pop culture icon and its products have become must-have products. By continuing to put out visually stunning, creative, revolutionary and easy to use products like the iPhone, Apple earns that status.

I could go on and on and weave iTunes and even Microsoft into the story, but the long and short is that first the iPod and then the iPhone filled a niche and they did so with the combination of perfect timing, exquisite product placement, and downright beautiful and idiot proof pieces of equipment. When you put it all together, you answer the "Why?".
