National Building Museum: Magnificent Bit of History in Washington DC

"National Building Museum"

The National Building Museum started out as office space for the post-Civil War Pension Bureau, and "to provide a suitably grand space for Washington’s social and political functions."

I'd say the architect succeeded in filling that need: The Great Hall is about the right size for an American football field, 316 feet by 116 feet, with a ceiling that's 159 feet at its peak.

As the National Building Museum's website says, "US Army Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs was appointed as both the architect and engineer for the building. The building was Meig's last and most important architectural work and the one of which he was most proud."

If that interior looks familiar, it should. The building's website posted a notice on its home page: "On Saturday, June 7, the Museum will be closed for a special event. We apologize for any inconvenience; please visit us on Sunday, June 8 for regularly scheduled programs and exhibits."

That "special event" the gathering where Hillary Clinton ended her bid for the White House."
