"Lava is thought to be close to the surface of the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, suggesting a modest eruption might occur. But geologists don't really know if it will erupt, or if lava might simply flow from the summit, or neither.

"In past events, the volcano's lava has sometimes travelled 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the crater to the sea. The flows, at 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit, occasionally explode when they contact the cool ocean waters...."
