You've run into 'baiting' discussion threads - and blog posts. The sort that ask questions in a way that's calculated to arouse the passions of people.
The "Blog catalog: sample baiting discussion" is an interactive spoof of that bane of the blogosphere.
The thread starts with "What do you think of unicorns?"
So far, there have been apparently-insane comments, and at least one well-thought-out partial list of the sort of comments, and commenters, who generally get involved.
