Jumping on the BP Oil Spill Bandwagon

A whole lot of folks have been writing about that huge oil spill - gusher, actually - under the Gulf of Mexico. It's a mess, in several senses of the word, and I figure it's time for me to do another post about it.

From recent news and blogs:
  • "Fake tweets slam BP"
    CNN (June 6, 2010)
    • "A fake Twitter account is skewering BP for its handling of the oil crisis. CNN's Josh Levs reports...."
  • "AP Top News at 1:55 p.m. EDT"
The Associated Press (June 5, 2010)
    • "Driftwood and seashells glazed with rust-colored tar lined the surf along the Gulf Coast's once-pristine white sand beaches...."
  • "Coast Guard: BP collected 6,000 barrels of oil"
    USA Today (June 5, 2010)
    • "British Petroleum has collected 6,000 barrels of oil in the first 24 hours of pumping it from a leaking well up to a drill ship...."
  • "Cap Slows Gulf Oil Leak as Engineers Move Cautiously"
The New York Times (June 5, 2010)
    • "Oil continued to gush from a runaway oil well in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday as engineers worked to close the vents on a capping device they successfully lowered onto the gushing riser pipe late Thursday night...."
  • "Gulf oil spill: Cap starts doing its job, but officials remain cautious"
Greenspace, Los Angeles Times blog (June 5, 2010)
    • "Efforts to contain the flood of oil into the Gulf of Mexico showed the first signs of progress as 6,000 barrels of oil were pumped to the surface after the fitting of a containment cap over the blown well, officials said Saturday, but it was an incremental step that offered no guarantees of long-term success...."
  • "Now confirmed: Oil's washing ashore at Baldwin County beaches (photos)"
    al.com (June 4, 2010)
    • "Baldwin County's first landing of oil has been confirmed in Gulf Shores...."
    • A tip of the hat to JimCantore, on Twitter, for the heads-up on this one
      • His comment: "Just sick about this:"
No matter how you look at it, this isn't good for the Gulf coast. At all.

I'm also pretty sure that we haven't heard the last of what went so hideously wrong at that British Petroleum drilling operation. There's no shortage of finger-pointing going on, some of it maybe legitimate; much of it, I suspect, business as usual.

The Lemming doesn't have a firm opinion about who's to blame for what - apart from the monumentally obvious 'something went wrong.'
