"7.0 Magnitude Earthquake hits Haiti --Tsunami Watch Posted--January 12th, 2010"

"(CNN) -- A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and inflicting a catastrophe on the impoverished Caribbean nation, its ambassador...."

"Harry Smith spoke to Haiti's ambassador to the U.S. Raymond Alcide Joseph on the latest of the aftermath from the Haitian earthquake."

The quake hit around 4:50 p.m., it seems: Happily, quite a few people were out of Haitian government buildings when the quake hit. I hope the same was true for private-sector offices.

"State department assisting Americans with relatives in Haiti"

I know, but America is close to Haiti - and this country has a habit of helping people. Turns out, by the way, that the Port au Prince airport is in working condition.

Toward the end of the video, reporters tell you how to get 'send help' information from White House and other American government websites:

Links to charities at Also,
  • U.S. Department of State Helpline for Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti:
    1-888-407-4747
  • The reporters didn't say this, but I will:
    • If you aren't asking about your family members in Haiti
      • STAY OFF THE LINE
    • If you call just to chat, you could be keeping someone with a legitimate question from getting through
These reporters let a little secret slip out: "...Americans are very generous people...." (Again, I know: but as I've said before, the Lemming is "apathetic" only in that I don't care about the 'right' things (September 9, 2007) More about my views, in "Being Counter-Cultural: I am Not Now, Nor Have I Ever Been, a Hippie" (January 12, 2010))
