Pipsissewa: Endangered, Among Other Things

"Chimaphila umbellata (L.) W. Bartram"
pipsissewa
United States Department of Agriculture

"...This plant and the related entityitalicized and indented below are listed by the U.S. federal government or a state. Common names are from state and federal lists. Click on a place name to get a complete protected plant list for that location...."

Depending on which American state you're in, the pipsissewa is endangered, threatened, or exploitably vulnerable.

It's a perennial, by the way: described as a "subshrub." The Lemming likes the sound of that: "Subshrub."

The Pipsissewa is also a character in Howard R. Garis' Uncle Wiggly books. And that's another topic.
